World Cup 2026 Travel Tips — Flights, Hotels & Fan Guide
Updated June 2026 · 9 min read
Planning a trip to the 2026 World Cup across three countries requires careful preparation. Whether you are following your national team through group stages or flying in for a knockout match, this guide covers everything from visa requirements to local transport.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Since the tournament spans three countries, you may need multiple entry permissions:
- United States: Most European, South American, and Asian fans need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a B1/B2 visa. Apply at least 72 hours before travel. ESTA costs $21 and is valid for 2 years.
- Mexico: Citizens of the EU, UK, Canada, Japan, and many South American countries can enter visa-free for up to 180 days. Others need a tourist visa from the Mexican consulate.
- Canada: Many nationalities need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which costs CAD $7 and takes minutes to process. US citizens do not need an eTA.
FIFA Fan ID may provide additional entry facilitation. Check FIFA.com for the latest updates on the Fan ID program.
Getting Between Host Cities
With 16 venues spread across North America, inter-city travel is a key planning consideration:
Domestic Flights (Recommended)
The fastest way to move between US host cities. Budget airlines like Southwest, Spirit, and Frontier connect most World Cup cities directly. Book early — World Cup dates will see significant fare increases.
Tip: Consider multi-city flight bookings on Google Flights or Skyscanner. Southwest allows free checked bags, useful for long trips.
Cross-Border Travel
USA to Mexico: Fly to Mexico City (MEX), Monterrey (MTY), or Guadalajara (GDL) from any major US hub. Direct flights from Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles are 2-3 hours.
USA to Canada: Vancouver (YVR) is a short flight from Seattle. Toronto (YYZ) connects easily from New York, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Accommodation Tips
- Book now: Hotels in host cities will sell out months in advance. Areas near stadiums are already seeing 3-5x normal pricing for June/July 2026.
- Consider alternatives: Airbnb, VRBO, and hostels offer budget options. In Mexico, boutique hotels and Airbnbs are significantly cheaper than US hotels.
- Stay near transit: Choose accommodation near subway/metro lines that connect to the stadium. Driving and parking on match days is extremely difficult.
- Suburban stays: Hotels 20-30 minutes outside the city center can be 50-70% cheaper. With good transit, this is a smart budget strategy.
Local Transport on Match Day
Each host city handles stadium access differently:
- New York (MetLife): NJ Transit trains from Penn Station + shuttle buses. Do NOT drive — parking is extremely limited on World Cup days.
- Los Angeles (SoFi): Metro C Line to Downtown Inglewood station + shuttle. LA traffic makes driving risky on match days.
- Dallas (AT&T): TRE train to CentrePort station + shuttle. Pre-paid parking available at the stadium.
- Mexico City (Azteca): Metro Line 2 to Tasqueña + Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca. Extremely efficient and cheap.
- Miami (Hard Rock): Limited transit — consider rideshare or pre-paid parking.
Money & Currency
- USA: US Dollar (USD). Credit cards accepted everywhere. Apple Pay and Google Pay widely supported.
- Mexico: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD accepted in tourist areas but at unfavorable rates. Use ATMs for best exchange rates. Avoid airport exchange bureaus.
- Canada: Canadian Dollar (CAD). Credit cards and tap-to-pay accepted everywhere.
