Format Explained

Each group plays a round-robin of 6 matches (3 per team). With 32 of 48 teams advancing (67%), even finishing third gives a strong chance of progression. The qualification criteria for third-placed teams are: points, then goal difference, then goals scored.

Group A

Teams: Mexico, South Africa, Korea Republic, Czechia

Host nation advantage gives the USA a strong opening group. Morocco are the dark horse after their 2022 semi-final run.

Match to watch: USA vs Morocco — a rematch of one of 2022's most dramatic storylines.

Group B

Teams: Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland

Argentina enter as defending champions and heavy favorites. A fascinating group with South American and European competition.

Group C

Teams: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland

Mexico playing at the Estadio Azteca gives them a massive home advantage at altitude. Ecuador are underrated contenders.

Group D

Teams: United States, Paraguay, Australia, Turkiye

France are favorites after back-to-back finals (2018 winner, 2022 runner-up). Depth across all positions.

Teams: Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador

Brazil always bring tournament pedigree. This group will feature some of the most attacking football in the group stage.

Group F

Teams: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

England's golden generation gets another shot. One of the more competitive groups with European quality.

Match to watch: England's final group match — winner likely tops the group.

Group G

Teams: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand

Teams: Spain, Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay

Teams: France, Senegal, Iraq, Norway

Portugal with a mix of veterans and emerging talent. Canada playing a home World Cup adds extra motivation.

Teams: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan

Italy looking to bounce back after missing 2022. A group with strong European representation.

Teams: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

An open group where any team could advance. Expect close, competitive matches throughout.

Match to watch: The final matchday — all four teams could still qualify.

Groups of Death

With 48 teams, the expanded format creates several highly competitive groups. The most dangerous groups are those where a traditional powerhouse risks early elimination. Watch for groups containing multiple FIFA top-20 teams — these produce the most dramatic and high-quality group stage football.

What Happens After Groups?

32 teams advance to the knockout stage. The Round of 32 runs from June 28 to July 3, followed by the Round of 16 (July 4-7), Quarter-Finals (July 9-11), Semi-Finals (July 14-15), and the Final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
